Environmentally Sensitive Bird Control
The Birdman works out of the Lower Mainland of Vancouver B.C. Canada. I have been busy doing gull control at a waste transfer station. Using Saker falcons and Harris Hawks I have been able to completely control the feeding of large flocks of gulls. The gulls have been using this particular site as a main food source for a number of years. This made the initial few weeks somewhat difficult but the hawks soon adjusted to the heavy work load and gained the upper hand. The Sakers have really proved their worth controlling gulls at a green waste composting facility.
The falcons are flown in a direct pursuit manner not unlike Arab falconry with Houbara. These desert falcons are very similar to the Harris and I use them somewhat like a long range Harris. At first the gulls were not sure of this foreign falcon and her intent. However it wasnt long before the gulls recognized the long winged raptor as a threat and to avoid her at all costs. The Sakers would ring up with the flock of gulls and drive them far away to the Fraser River. The Saker is not know as an obedient falcon and to fly one out of its precise flying weight is asking for trouble. I am however impressed with the raptors intelligence, again similarities can drawn with the Harris Hawk.
The aim of pest control with birds of prey is to offer an environmentally sensitive option. The intent is basically scare tactics. The number of the birds taken in flight by the hawks is relatively small compared to the number of flights at the intended quarry.
